Crossbody or shoulder: where the bag ends up sitting
The strap length decides more about a day out than the shape does.
Strap drop dictates where the base rests
We measure strap spans from clip to clip along the full run of the leather. In our workshop counts across 152 bags, 17 designs focus specifically on this choice between shoulder carry and cross-body wear. A strap that adjusts from 38 to 59.1 inches gives you the reach to clear a heavy coat in winter. Shorten that same strap down to 38 inches, and the top rim lifts right beneath the elbow.
The resting point changes how the weight behaves. A shoulder bag stays pinned by the upper arm, keeping the zipper close to your ribs. Let that strap out to 50 inches, and the bag swings down toward the hip bone. The base moves with your stride instead of sitting static against your torso.
Small cavities behave differently across the body
Compact phone purses built around 7.5 by 3 by 6 inches occupy 135 cubic inches of internal volume. Another slender cut measures 7.41 by 2.53 by 5.46 inches, giving 102 cubic inches of space. When cut this small, a cross-body mount keeps the leather from tipping sideways. The strap holds the small frame flat against your hip while you walk.
A tall profile changes the balance entirely. Our 5.91 by 2.56 by 7.48 inch design stands upright, packing 113 cubic inches into a vertical column. This vertical cut keeps the zipper facing straight up toward your hand, preventing loose items from tumbling past the teeth when you pull the slider open.
Larger hobo shapes need shorter drops
Broader shapes carry different interior volume. A hobo cut measuring 9.84 by 3.94 by 7.09 inches holds 275 cubic inches within top-layer cowhide walls. If you mount a cavity this wide on a 55 inch strap, the bottom swings wide and bumps your thigh with every step. Taking the adjustment down between 43.82 and 53.54 inches brings the load back to your waist level.
- A wallet slips into every small cross-body frame we cut without crowding the zipper.
- A tablet fits inside the 275 cubic inch hobo cavity alongside keys and phone.
- A tall water bottle demands the depth of our wider shoulder designs to stand upright.
- A sheet of paper lying flat will not clear these compact cross-body footprints.
Matching the strap adjustment to your coat
Outer layers steal strap length quickly. A wool jacket or a padded down coat lifts the strap apex off your collarbone, eating up three or four inches of reach. If your bag strap maxes out at 46.46 inches, a winter layer will drag the bag up into your ribcage. You need the upper range of 55.91 or 58.2 inches to let the base drop back down to your hip.
We punch multiple adjustment holes into our cowhide straps so you can shift between seasons. When spring comes and you wear light cotton, draw the buckle back toward the middle holes. The strap stays snug, and the metal hardware rests flat against your shoulder seam without sliding off your chest.
